I'm Back

Sorry I disappeared again for a few weeks. The kids got really sick and then a week after they got better, James and I got it. We did the bare minimum for two weeks. Now, we are back and working hard! I am still having to make James not do heavy lifting, sadly this means I have to do the heavy lifting so he can do all the things he wants to get done.

What does this look like? Well, this week has been taking the kids to school then coming home, tossing some laundry in and then getting to work. We have got the garden mowed, seeds started, some weeding, hung hooks from the deck, hanging planters and prepped two planter boxes. It has been so much work. After putting in a day I drive back to get the kids from school.

Two of the baskets are strawberry plants and the other two are annuals. One of the annuals I got from my In-laws for Mothers Day!

Friday, we went house shopping, No we aren't moving, but I am hoping to convince my parents to move closer to us! (DAD!) We got the tractor hooked up to the rototiller. I hefted while James got it attached. James rototilled the area that we will be placing the next set of boxes. I weeded the garlic zone. Then we called it a day. Needed all my rest for James plans for Saturday.

One of these belts are not where it is supposed to be. We fixed it and then the problem happened again after James did the rototilling. I was not fixing it again so away it went.

Finding the garlic among the grass was about as fun as finding the dead thistles mixed in the grass.

Saturday, so much lifting. James wanted to get all the tractor attachments that we don't need for the summer into the barn, this also included the rototiller that once again popped a belt. The lifting started with getting the rototiller off the tractor and pushed to the side in the barn, then James driving the tractor back to the house to get the plow and other attachment (which we didn't know the purpose of) onto the tractor. He then drove it back to the barn where I went to work. On the plus side we figured out the random attachments purpose. It would have been nice to know what it was last summer when we could have used it. It is something that pops on the back and you can put things like the wire for fencing so that it can unroll smoothly without needing to hold them in place or walk beside. Last summer we rigged the little trailer to do this but it was difficult and not smooth in any way. Of course we are done with fencing now. After the tractor stuff was all away it was time to walk the boards for the garden boxes up so that Sunday we can get to work building more boxes. The last thing we did was attach the mower to the tractor and then I finished mowing the yard and garden!

We still have a lot of weeding to do but everything else is prepped and ready or already planted. So far we have radishes, lettuce, strawberries(perennial), carrots, zucchini, pumpkins and potatoes.

Sunday, was the day we were supposed to get three more boxes built. James' parents were out for a make up Mother's Day supper and to help with the boxes, plus weeding. My mother in law and I got the raspberries weeded and pruned, James and his Dad got one box built. Then, because the weather seems out to get us it poured rain for a bit shutting down the building and weeding. We had a yummy dinner and that was a wrap for the week. You get a little extra though as thanks to the rain instead of writing this blog on Monday and posting it I was outside building more boxes.

Box 1

Raspberries

Onions(that we missed last year, this year they are in a box)

Monday, James and I finished building the two other boxes and lined the bottom of all three. We then weighed down the middle. Now we wait for our dirt! After the dirt is in we will have more planting updates. I now have some inside stuff to catch up on, like laundry, and plans to make a auto water system for the chickens. We are thinking a rain barrel on top of a platform and then connect lines to it. They can have some rain water but we can also fill up the rain barrel with house water, as well, without having to walk in the coop.

Now let me toss in some fun photos of the kids and one with the new stickers for my kindle! The kiddos were very happy that the temp finally got to be over twenty and they could have the sprinkler under the trampoline.

The stickers are from Two Tone Ink in Quebec!

Whew that is done. Or at least most of it. Now we need to order a haul of dirt to fill all the boxes then buy plants to fill them! I have not enjoyed all the prep but it will look amazing and provide us with food when it is done. This is my last week off work as I go back June 4th. I am going to be doing some work in the chicken coop and more garden work. I can't wait to go back to work! That is all! Talk to you all next week, hopefully.
